Tech News: Travellers flying with Emirates will not be allowed to use power banks during flights, effective October 1, 2025. The airline has put in place a new rule that bans passengers from using these devices while onboard. According to regulation, Each passenger can bring one power bank of up to 100 watt-hours in cabin baggage, but it cannot be used to charge phones or tablets. Recharging the power banks using in-seat outlets.
The airline said the move followed a safety check. Emirates explained that with more people relying on power banks, there has also been an increase in battery-related issues on flights. This new rule is meant to lower the chances of accidents caused by overheating or faulty batteries. The airline pointed out that lithium batteries in power banks have become a growing concern in the aviation industry.
Emirates has also made it clear how these devices must be kept. Only power banks with visible capacity ratings will be accepted, and they must be stored in the seat pocket or under the seat in front. They cannot be placed in overhead bins. The airline added that its aircraft already have charging ports, so passengers should make sure their devices are fully charged before boarding, especially when flying long distances.
Power banks are small portable chargers often used for phones, tablets, smartwatches, and in some cases, laptops. Since they contain lithium batteries, they can be dangerous if damaged or misused. Aviation bodies like the FAA, TSA, CAA, and IATA already have rules about carrying them. Normally, power banks up to 100Wh (about 27,000mAh) are allowed in hand luggage. Some airlines permit devices up to 160Wh with approval, but anything above that is banned. The IATA also allows up to 20 spare power banks or batteries under 100Wh, and two between 100–160Wh with approval. However, airlines can apply stricter measures, as Emirates has chosen to do. Travellers carrying power banks should make sure the device is in good condition, under the 100Wh limit, and only for personal use. Passengers are advised to fully charge their power banks and electronic gadgets before leaving for the airport, as only in-seat and airport outlets can be used during their journey.
